Ruth Roman is the youngest child born to Lithuanian as well as Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. She was only a young toddler when her father who worked as a carnival barker died. Her mother had to take on jobs including waitressing and cleaning. Ruth was raised in a tenement community that was poor of Boston, Massachusetts, where she attended school. Following only two school years, Ruth left to pursue an acting career. The path she chose was not without obstacles. When she was in New York, her first task was to pose stills for crime magazines. the theatre work that she longed to do was abyssal. After working as a hat-check girl at a nightclub she quit her job and moved back to Boston. There, she made enough money with her ushering duties throughout the day, and at night performing with the New England Repertory Company, her first steady acting job. She graduated with a certificate in drama at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
